Antofagasta is a port city in northern Chile the Pacific Ocean and is the capital of the province of Antofagasta.The city has 346,126 inhabitants (2012). The city is located at the Atacama Desert, the world’s driest desert and therefore has a very dry climate.
Mining is very important for Antofagasta economy, and the area is important for mining exploration in Chile. The region is also the richest in the country with the highest GDP per capita. The city was founded in 1866 originally belonged to Bolivia, but came under Chilean control in 1879.
In Chile, Antofagasta known as the “pearl of the north.” It has several great beaches although some of them are artificial, and a wild and beautiful coast with special rock formations. Among the most attractive tourist spots are nature reserve of La Chimba National Reserve located approx. 10 km to the northeast, in the Quebrada La Chimba. Many tourists use Antofagasta as a base to visit the Atacama Desert. It is said that the area is so quiet that “one can hear the desert.” There are several stunning national parks both north and south of Antofagasta.
Cerro Moreno International Airport is the nearest airport which is just north of the city. Despite the fact that it declares itself to be an international airport has only domestic flights.
