Badajoz is located in southwestern Spain, and is the capital of the province of the same name.The city lies on the River Guadiana – only 10 km from the border with Portugal, and 175 km northwest of Seville.

Badajoz has 159,000 inhabitants (2011), and is the province’s financial and commercial center.

The city is also a major service center for the region of Extremadura.

Badajoz has a continental Mediterranean climate with mild winters and hot dry summers.

Badajoz was founded in 875, when the Muslims dominated the Iberian Peninsula. The city is known for its culture and its historic sites.

The city’s biggest tourist attraction is the Alcazaba de Badajoz from the 1100s, an Arab fortress with multiple turrets intact. The castle also has a wall surrounding the fortress. Within, there is a park, Duke palace from the 1600s and an archaeological museum.

Bridge “Puente de las Palmas” from 1596, is also a popular attraction. The bridge – which is made of granite – crossing the Guadiana River and is 582 meters long, 13 meters high and has 32 arches.

Other attractions include Badajoz the impressive Cathedral of San Juan from 1284, the beautiful historic quarter, with several squares and churches, art gallery “Museo Provincial de Bellas Artes” and an art museum with an exhibition of contemporary art from the region.

The nearest airport is Badajoz Airport, located 13 miles east of downtown. The airport has direct flights to Spanish destinations like Barcelona, Madrid and Malaga.
