Belgrade is the capital of Serbia, and the country’s most populous city with 1.1 million inhabitants (2011).When the entire metropolitan area, the population is increasing to 1.7 million people.

Belgrade is located in northern Serbia – where the river Sava flows into the Danube.

The capital is the country’s political, cultural and economic center as well as Serbia’s center for education and research – and two universities. Belgrade is also an important transport hub with the river port, international airport, railway and roads.

The city has a wide range of attractions and historical monuments from different eras and from different cultures. Belgrade Fortress –   “Kalemegdan” – located in the historic downtown and is a famous landmark.The fortress is from the 1700s, and nowadays houses a historical military museum.

Also St. Sava church is a major tourist attraction in Belgrade. The church is located at Vracar, and is considered one of the world’s Orthodox churches. St. Sava church was officially opened in 2004.

Other attractions in the city include The Serbian National Museum – with a large collection of paintings and exhibits and art museum “Museum of Modern Art.”

The city also has an ethnographic museum – with a rich collection of costumes, an African museum, a natural history museum, a military aviation museum, a zoological garden as well as theaters and opera.

Belgrade hosts a variety of annual festivals – including the film festival, international theater, music and international book fair.

The city’s airport – Belgrade Airport “Nicosia Tesla” – located 18 miles northwest of downtown.
