Bratislava is the capital and largest city in Slovakia, located southwest of the country – near the border with both Austria and Hungary.The city has 430,000 inhabitants (2010). Bratislava is the political, cultural and economic center of the country, and the city is the seat of the Slovak president and government.

Bratislava is situated on both sides of the river Danube, and river port. The city is known for its viticulture and winemaking – especially when white wines.

Bratislava has a rich cultural life with theaters, opera, museums, art galleries and concert venues. The old town has undergone extensive renovation and attracts many tourists with its many cultural institutions.

One of the landmarks is Castle Bratislava Castle (“Bratislavsky hrad”), originally from the 1000’s and is located on a hill overlooking the city. The current castle is from the 1600s, and is now adapted as a museum.

Other popular tourist attractions in Bratislava include the Gothic St. Martin’s Cathedral from the 1200s, presidential palace, the Slovak National Museum, Natural History Museum and the Slovak National Gallery.

The old bridge “Stary Most” from 1890 is also an interest in Bratislava and the new bridge “Novy Most” from 1972.

Bratislava organizes a number of annual events – including international music, theater, and film festivals.

The city’s international airport – Bratislava Airport (Mr. Stefanik Airport) is located 9 miles northeast of downtown.
