Fortress city of Carcassonne is located in southern France, specifically in the region of Languedoc-Roussillon.The city belongs to the French Ministry of Aude, and have less than 50,000 inhabitants (2009).

Aude river runs through Carcassonne and separates the upper old town “la Cité” and the lower (higher) district “Ville Basse.”

Medieval Old Town is surrounded by double fortification walls with numerous towers, and here lies the fortress “Cité de Carcassonne” castle “Château Comtal” from the 1100s and St. Nazariusbasilikaen from the 1000s. The old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and approximately 3 million tourists visit the place every year.

Over the River Aude is the old stone bridge “Pont Vieux” from the 1300s and bridge “Pont Neuf” – that connect the neighbourhoods together.Of interest in the district of “Ville Basse” to the main square “Place Carnot” is mentioned, and here we also find Neptune statue from 1770. The area is also

St. Michel cathedral from the 1200s.

The channel “Canal de Midi” from 1681 – which connects the Atlantic Ocean with the Mediterranean Sea – goes through the lower part of town. This is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The city’s international airport Carcassonne Airport, located 3 km southwest of the city.
