Fortress city of Carcassonne is located in southern France, specifically in the region of Languedoc-Roussillon.The city belongs to the French Ministry of Aude, and have less than 50,000 inhabitants (2009).
Aude river runs through Carcassonne and separates the upper old town “la Cité” and the lower (higher) district “Ville Basse.”
Medieval Old Town is surrounded by double fortification walls with numerous towers, and here lies the fortress “Cité de Carcassonne” castle “Château Comtal” from the 1100s and St. Nazariusbasilikaen from the 1000s. The old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and approximately 3 million tourists visit the place every year.
