Chiang Mai is the capital of the province of Chiang Mai, located in the northern part of Thailand.The city has a population of 210,000 (2010) – and is the most important in this part of the country. Ping River runs through the city, and the city is surrounded by high mountains.
Chiang Mai was founded in the 1200s – and was the capital of the medieval kingdom of Lanna until 1768.
Among Chiang Mai’s many attractions to showcase related to the story – which has made it one of Thailand’s most popular tourist destination. Traditional Crafts of silk and ceramics, as well as a large selection of jewellery, can be bought anywhere – and its many beautiful temples are well worth a visit. The most famous temple is located on top of the mountain Doi Suthep – 1200 m From here there are wonderful views over the town and surrounding countryside.
The central part of Chiang Mai is surrounded by a moat, where there is a rich life of fish and turtles.
Over the past few years, Chiang Mai has also evolved into a modern city that has invested heavily in technology and education.
The nearest airport is Chiang Mai International Airport, located just outside the center – at the foot of Doi Suthep Mountain.
