Copenhagen is denmark’s capital and largest city, and is located by the Øresund Strait on the islands of Zealand and Amager. The city itself has 540,000 inhabitants (2011), while the metropolitan area has a population of about 1.2 million. Copenhagen is the country’s most important cultural and economic centre. In addition, the city is an important transport hub.
The centre of Copenhagen is called “the inner city”, and here lies the pedestrian street “Strøget” – which runs from The Town Hall Square to Kongens Nytorv. Strøget is known for its great shopping with shops, big magazines and arcades. Copenhagen is also famous for its vibrant and varied nightlife, and in summer nyhavn is a popular and colourful restaurant and café area.
Attractions
The vast majority probably know Copenhagen’s famous sculpture “The Little Mermaid” from 1913, which stands at the port of the østerbro district – a little north of the city centre. Also the city’s amusement park “Tivoli” is known to the general public. Otherwise, Copenhagen has countless tourist attractions and sights – including the country’s leading museum institutions in cultural history, art and natural history.
Many tourists find their way to Amalienborg Castle from 1766 – which has been royal residence since 1794. Parts of the castle are open to the public – among other things. a museum showing the king’s private rooms from the period 1863 – 1947. The Danish Kings’ Chronological Collections can also be seen in the Amalienborg Museum.
Other attractions in Copenhagen include: Rosenborg Castle from 1624 – where you can see the exhibition of the Danish crown jewels, copenhagen city museum, Our Lady Church from 1829, Round Tower from 1642 and the National Museum – which was founded in 1807.

Although Copenhagen has a lot of exciting to offer, renting a car is not a bad idea when you are there. You don’t have to spend long on the road to get some unique experiences. Denmark is not the big country, the roads are good, and traffic usually runs quite afloat. However, what you should experience is harder to determine. There are a lot of great places to choose from. Here are some suggestions for those who want to take a drive with Copenhagen as a starting point.
Dragør – Denmark’s most beautiful village
Apparently, the small and old town of Dragør has Denmark’s most happy inhabitants. Whether this is true is probably not easy to determine, but that the Dragør people should at least be satisfied with the surroundings there is no doubt. The small town was formerly an important port, central to shipping, trade and fishing in the region. The center consists of beautiful small houses, many of which are several hundred years old. The streets are cobbled and intimate, and everywhere you will find pleasant dining options,galleries, cosy shops and museums. Fishing is still an important source of income for many of the inhabitants, and you can enjoy this at the restaurants there. The proximity to Copenhagen also makes it very popular with a drive to Dragør.
- Dragør is located just past Kastrup, and about 14 km from the center of Copenhagen. The driving time is around 20 minutes.
Egeskov Castle – Unique castle on the island of Funen
This castle is of the most beautiful in both Denmark and Europe. Egeskov is located on the island of Funen, the one you drive over to get between Zealand and Jutland, and not so far from Odense. As it appears today, the castle is dated to the year 1554, but it was then built on the foundations of an earlier version. The beautiful brick castle is surrounded by a small pond, and in the area there are lovely parks, a farm belonging to the castle, museum, café, playground, festival area and beautiful forests. The museum not only addresses the history of the castle, but also has several other impressive exhibitions. Among other things, you can look at a collection of vintage cars, emergency vehicles from the old days, vintage motorcycles and art exhibitions.
- From Copenhagen to Egeskov Castle it is about 160 kilometers. Most of the trip goes on the highway. Without stopping, you will spend about 1 hour and 50 minutes on the drive.
Legogland, Givskud Zoo and Lalandia – Best for families
Billund has developed into perhaps Denmark’s best area for family activities. Here you will find Legoland side by side with Lalandia, a kind of village with cottage rental, and connected to a large amusement park. In the park you will find all kinds of water activities, games, playgrounds and much more. Givskud Zoo is about 25 minutes away and The Legoland Is located in Lalandia. There you will see, among other things, gorilla, lions, giraffes, rhinos, antelopes, buffalo and many other exciting species. The animals in the zoo have large areas to frolic on, and live quite almost as they would in their natural habitat. It is quite possible to get to a day trip to Billund with car rental from Copenhagen, but we recommend an overnight stay or two, especially for those travelling with children.
- From Copenhagen to Billund it is about 260 kilometers. You drive on good motorways all the way to Vejle, and then about 30 kilometres on the national road. The driving time without a stop is approximately 2 hours and 40 minutes.
Malmö – Sister City just above the strait
In the airline it is not more than about 20 kilometers from Copenhagen to Malmö. The Swedish city has a lot to show case and is perfect for a day trip from Denmark’s capital. The old town is the heart of Malmö city centre,where you will find most of the older sights. This historic centre is bordered by canals and is located next to the magnificent Kungsparken Park,with Malmöhus Castle at one end. From there it is walking distance to the city’s more modern center, Västra Hamnen. In this area stands the skyscraper Turning Torso. The house is the highest building in the Nordic region, with a height of 190 meters. Västra Hamnen is a nice area to shop in, sit on the pier, take in a café or restaurant, and participate in the bustling folk life.
- From the center of Copenhagen to the center of Malmö it is no more than 42 kilometers. There is a motorway throughout the stretch, and the driving time is about 40 minutes.

Møns Klint – Unique nature experience on the island of Møn
The Møns Klint cliff wall is the highest in Denmark. From the beach and the sea below, the cliff goes 128 meters to the weather. You can find it on the east side of the island of Møn, which is located as an extension of the southern end of Zealand. The rock was formed about 75 million years ago, and consists of the limestone chalk. Besides catching up with the unique nature experience, you should also stop by GeoCenter Møns Klint when you are there. The centre is also the best place to park your rental car when watching the cliff. The Geological Research Centre has a very good visitor experience centre and is suitable for people of all ages.
- It is 135 kilometers from the city center in Copenhagen and to GeoCenter Møns Klint. The first 40 minutes go on the highway, and then it is about 1 hour on the country road. The total running time is normally 1 hour and 40 minutes.
Parking and traffic with car hire
Copenhagen is divided into several zones when it comes to parking. You pay more to park in the innermost zone, and prices drop the further away from the city centre you get. You can make the payment at the vending machines located on the sidewalks, where you enter the registration number of the rental car. You can also pay with your mobile phone if you download an app in advance. On weekends (from 17:00 on Saturdays), and between 17:00 and 08:00 during the week, it is free to park on marked places. There is also a relatively high number of parking garages in the city centre you can use.
The densest traffic in Copenhagen is not always caused by cars, but often by those who use bicycles as a means of transport. In fact, there are more people riding here than those who choose to drive. Because the city is so bike-friendly, it is somewhat easier to get there by car than in many other places. At the same time, one should be extra careful, as there are a high number of soft road users in the streets.
Airport
The official name of the airport is Copenhagen Airport, but most people know it as Kastrup. This is the largest airport in the Nordic countries,with over 30 million passengers a year. Companies flying within the Schengen area use gate A2 to A24 or street F1 to F9.
It’s easy to pick up or deliver a rental car at Kastrup. All of the currently 6 companies are assembled in a separate car rental centre. This is connected to the parking lot outside Terminal 3, and in the same place you will find the train station, the subway, and the bus station.
- It is 9 km from the airport and into the center of Copenhagen if you drive the shortest route via Amager. You will take about 15 to 20 minutes by car rental.
