Durban is a major port city in the South African KwaZulu-Natal province. It is located on the Indian Ocean, specifically in Natal Bay – approx. 500 km southeast of Johannesburg. With over 3 million (2010) Durban is South Africa’s second largest urban area.

In addition to its important port function is Durban also a major industrial, education center and holiday resort. Some of South Africa’s finest beaches are here – which has provided the basis for a comprehensive tourism.

The city was founded in 1824, and was originally called Port Natal. It was later named after colonial Governor D’Urban. The city began to expand in the middle of the 1800s in connection with a large-scale ubygging the port area.

Durban has a large Indian population touches, and just west of the city center is the Indian Quarter. With all its vibrant markets, temples and well-preserved buildings from the last century, this is a popular destination. It is also the largest mosque in the Southern Hemisphere – Jumah Musjid.

Durban has a very beautiful location – and the city is characterized by wide streets, inviting parks and stately public buildings. Among these, the most impressive town hall. In addition to City Hall functions it houses an interesting collection of South African art and a natural science museum.

Durban’s most popular tourist attractions are the stunning beaches. The most famous is The Golden Mile, which is over 6 km long. It should however be aware that thieves will find this beach attractive. The smaller beaches are safer in this respect – and less crowded.
