Helsinki, Finland’s capital and is located in southern Finland by Finlandsgulfen which is an arm of the Baltic Sea. The city has a population of 604,380 (2012) inhabitants. Both the Finnish and Swedish are the official languages. Helsinki is the original name of the town and it is called in Swedish.
Helsinki was founded in 1550, 300 years after the Swedes had taken the country by Swedish King Gustav Vasa. But there was a small population in the city and this did not change until Russia conquered Finland in 1808 and Finland came under the Russian tsar. Finland became independent in 1917 after the Russian Revolution the same year.
The city has a reputation for being good at design, and in 2009 the city was chosen to be the World Design Capital in 2012. Just outside of town on some islands situated fortress Suomenlinna is one of the largest coastal fort and was begun by the Swedes in 1748. The place which is on the UNESCO World Heritage List is a popular destination especially during summer.
