Crete (621,000 inhabitants in 2011) is located between the Aegean and the Mediterranean, and is the largest and most populous of the Greek islands.

Crete has three mountain ranges, and the highest peak – Idhi Óros – measures 2545 m

The capital of Crete – Iraklion (Heraklion) – located on the island’s northern coast, and has 173,000 inhabitants (2011). The city is therefore the 4th largest in   Greece .From the port of Iraklion is the car ferry to such Piraeus – located just off   Athens .

Other major cities of Crete are Chania (Khania) and Rethymnon.

Some of the most famous sights of Crete include ancient Knossos, the Archaeological Museum of Iraklion, the ruins of the Minoan city Gournia and Samaria – which is Europe’s longest.

Crete’s main airport is Heraklion International Airport – “Nikos Kazantzakis”   – Located 5 km east of Iraklion center. The slightly smaller airport –    Chania International Airport – is also often used for charter.
