Kiev is the capital of Ukraine, located in the North – on both sides of the Dnieper River. Kiev has 2.8 million inhabitants (2010), and is the country’s largest city.

Kiev is an important industrial, scientific, educational and cultural center of Eastern Europe, and also an important road and rail hub for Ukraine.

The city has about 25 museums, operas, theaters, botanical and zoological gardens, planetarium, water parks and circuses.

A major tourist attraction in Kiev’s Sofia Cathedral from 1031, which was later rebuilt in the Baroque style.The cathedral is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It also makes the monastery “Petsjerskaja Lavra” (“Cave Monastery”) from the 1100s. The monastery has underground caves, and here is Moscow’s founder buried.

Other attractions include Kiev “Golden Port” – the city’s main port from 1000’s (later reconstructed), Andreyev church from the 1700s and the “National Museum of the history of the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945” –   with the 62 meter tall statue Rodina-mat.The Museum has over 300,000 exhibits.

The city is otherwise a national art museum, a history museum, the Museum of Western and Oriental Art and the National Museum of Russian Art.

The country’s largest airport – Kiev Boryspil International Airport – located 29 miles east of downtown.
