Lausanne is located in southwestern Switzerland – in a beautiful and hilly terrain on the north side of Lake Leman (Lake Geneva). The city is the capital of the canton of Vaud. In the Lausanne is home to around 120,000 inhabitants (2010), while the metropolitan area has a population of about 1.2 million. Almost all the Lausanne population is French-speaking.

Lausanne is a central hub for both rail that way – and also has a significant tourist influx. Lausanne is also an important utdanningsby, which both have their own university (founded already in 1537 as a theological academy), a polytechnic colleges, art academies and international hotel school.

It must also be noted that the International Olympic Committee has its headquarters in Lausanne, the city also has its own Olympic Museum – where sports history from antiquity to the present are presented.

Among the historical attractions of the city, the Gothic Cathedral “Cathédrale de Notre Dame” from 1275 (with five towers) is the best known. It is considered to be one of the most beautiful buildings in Switzerland from the Gothic era.

Near the cathedral, the “Place de la Riponne,” is “Palais de Rumina” – also home to the Lausanne Museum (Musée Cantonal des Beaux-Arts). Here you can see the works of famous Swiss and French artists.

A special attraction is also the castle “Château de Beaulieu the Musée de l’Art Brut.” The castle, which is located in the northwestern part, was erected in 1756, the art collection here is devoted to the style that the famous painter Jean Dubuffet in the 1940s called “Art Brut” – a form of psychopathological art created by schizophrenic artists.

Lausanne is also known for two major annual cultural events: Prix Lausanne, which is a world famous competition for young dancers (held in January-February each year) and Lausanne Carnival, each year in May fills the streets with carnival slackens, street theater, concerts, etc.

The nearest airport is Lausanne-Blécherette Airport, located 4 miles north of downtown.
