Leeuwarden is situated north of the Netherlands and has about 95,000 inhabitants (2011).The city is located in the province of Friesland – approx. 50 km west of Groningen.
Leeuwarden is the center for education and culture, and has many institutions and museums. The city is also an important railway junction.
Leeuwarden was incorporated as a city in 1435, and has a historic center with a number of well-preserved buildings. The old town is surrounded by canals, and here one can visit a church from the 1300s, the town hall from 1715, Leaning Church Tower “The Flow” from the 1500s and the building “Princesshof” from 1693, which today houses a ceramics museum.
The city has otherwise tourist attractions such as St. Boniface Church in 1884, several synagogues, Fries Museum – a museum with exhibits of art, culture and history from the province as well as a literary museum.
Every year Leeuwarden a large flower market, which attracts many visitors. The market is held around Easter.
