Malta is both a republic and a group of islands in the Mediterranean Sea, which lies about 93 km south of the Italian island of Sicily.

The main island, with the same name as the Republic has an area of 246 km2. Taken together, the Malta a land area of 316 km2. The total population is approx. 400,000 (2010), and most live on the main island of Malta.

Malta has a typical Mediterranean climate with mild, wet winters and hot, dry summers.

Malta’s capital Valletta, a small port city with approx.6500 inhabitants – located on the east coast of the main island. Valletta has many historic buildings, and the city is full of UNESCO’s World Heritage List.

Other cities in Malta is St. Julien and Slierne, which are popular vacation destinations. The same is the republic’s second largest island, Gozo.Tourism means at all very much for Malta’s finances. Malta has two official languages: Maltese and English.

Among the main tourist attractions elsewhere in Malta we find some remarkable remains of stone temples from the megalithic time – ie from the period 3000-2500 BC Kr. They are considered to be unique in the world. The largest stone blocks in one of the complexes weigh as much as 19 tons. There are also examples of ancient temples from the same time period – which is carved into the rock.

The only airport in Malta – Malta International Airport – lie just outside the capital Valletta.
