Valletta (La Valetta) Malta’s capital, and it is located on the northeast coast of the main island, on a headland between the two bays of Grand Harbour and Marsamxett Harbour. The city’s size is modest. Only around 6300 people living there (2006).

Businesses in the city is dominated by trade and tourism, the port of the ferry to Sicily in Italy.The city’s university was founded in 1769.

Valletta was founded 28 March 1556 to commemorate the victory over the Turks nine years earlier. The founder was Jean de Vallette (1494-1568), who was Grand Master of the Order of Johan Brads. Valletta was long the seat of Johan Brads Templar, which characterizes some of the old buildings. This includes the “Grand Master’s Palace”, where the order’s great masters are buried. It currently also function as Malta’s government building.

Despite Valletta were severely damaged during the 2 World War, still characterized the city of narrow, steep streets and architecture of the Baroque era. Also other eras – including Neo-Classicism – are represented. Valetta is entirely on UNESCO World Heritage List.

Among individual attractions include National Archaeological Museum is a popular destination. This is housed in a building from the 1500s, located on the main street, Triq ir-Republika. Here are almost all Malta’s history combined. Another major attraction is the impressive St. John’s Cathedral, built in the 1570-years for the Knights of Johan Brads-order. Especially the interior is magnificent. There is also a museum in the cathedral, where such can see the work of Caravaggio – and the cathedral’s crypt, the city’s founder, Jean de la Vallette, buried.

At the entrance to the city, on the small peninsula Sciberras, is the famous fortress of St. Elmo from the 1500s.

Malta’s only airport, Malta International Airport, located 5 km southwest of Valletta city.
