Much of the country is actually below sea level, but an extensive system of dikes, dams and dunes act as a protection against flooding. The scenery in the Netherlands is otherwise dominated by the large deltas formed by rivers Waal, Maas and IJssel – all of which are “arms” of the Rhine.
