Penang is a sultanate or state federation in Malaysia. It is located on the northwest coast of the Malay Peninsula, specifically the Straits of Malacca, and the population is around 1.5 million (2010). The capital is Georgetown. The state includes, in addition to the island of Penang, also mainland Seberang Prai area. One of the longest bridges linking Penang Island with the mainland.

Penang is an important traffic hub in Malaysia. It is equipped with a busy port, an international airport and well-developed rail connection both with the rest of the country and with neighboring Thailand.

The capital George Town is Penang’s largest city. Between 80 and 90% of the state’s population lives in the metropolitan area.

The city attracts tourists from all over the world, primarily because of the special atmosphere of the city, where there are picturesque, narrow streets and a whole myriad of street traders of various kinds.

George Town is characterized by its multi-cultural population. In addition to mosques and temples, which are often located side by side, there are impressive buildings both in English colonial style (eg Town Hall) and in traditional Chinese architecture (such as “clan house” Khoo Kongsi).

Otherwise, the mountain Penang Hill is a popular tourist destination. It is Malaysia’s first mountain station 830 m – and you have the choice to walk or use one of the custom-built train cars to reach the top. From here there is a magnificent view of Penang and the mainland.

Many visitors also take the trip to the village of Ayer Itam. There is in fact one of the most beautiful Buddhist temples throughout Southeast Asia – Kek Lok Si. It sits majestically on a hill, and the central temple complex are “The Ten thousand Buddhas Pagoda”. Top – on top of a number of floors – is the adorned with a golden spiral shaped top.

Penang International Airport is located 16 miles south of Georgetown.
