Lima is the capital of Peru and the country’s largest city – with about 8.4 million inhabitants (2011).

Lima is located in a fertile plain on the country’s west coast by the Pacific Ocean, through the town center runs the Rio Rimac. The most important port in Peru, Callao, located 13 km west of Lima.

Lima was founded in 1535 and is today the country’s administrative, economic and cultural center. The city is also an important transport hub. University “Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos” (founded in 1551) is located in Lima and is South America’s oldest.

The historic center of Lima is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here are many of the city’s tourist attractions – including the church and monastery of “San Francisco de Asis” from 1546, Cathedral (built between 1535-1625), the National Palace and Presidential Palace.

In the neighbourhood “Barrios Altos” – belonging to the old city – are also some older architecture from 1500 – and 1600’s.

Another attractions in Lima include “Museum of Italian Art” – an exhibition of sculptures, paintings and pottery objects made by artists from all regions of Italy.The city has otherwise historic museums, archaeological museums, natural history museums, botanical gardens and the national library.

Central to the town is also the bullring “Plaza de Acho” from the 1500s, and coast are modern neighbourhoods such. Miraflores and Magdalena del Mar – the beaches, hotels, restaurants, and nightlife areas.

The nearest airport is Jorge Chávez International Airport, located 8 km northwest of the city.
