Phuket is the capital of the southern Thai island of Phuket, which also constitutes a separate province. It received official city status as late as 2004 – and currently (2010) a population of around 85,000.
Phuket is primarily famous for its beach and nightlife and its many great restaurants. The town and the island has also many other activities to offer. Example, one can set aside a day to the temple tour and visit one or more of the around 30 Buddhist temples and monasteries on the island. Some of the most beautiful is Wat Chalong (which is particularly richly decorated) and Wat Phra Thong (“Golden-Buddha Temple”).
Another popular destination is Khao Phra Taheo National Park. It is located in the north of Phuket Island, and includes Thailand’s last remnants of the original rainforest, rainforests and spectacular waterfalls.
