Faro is a city in southern Portugal , specifically the Algarve coast .It has about 50,000 inhabitants (2010), is often regarded as the Algarve’s ‘capital’.

Besides tourism, which is the main way in Faro, also plays fisheries and fruit exports a significant role. The city has a large fishing port.

Most historical sights in the old town, but the oldest buildings were largely destroyed during a major earthquake that struck the area in 1755.

Among the attractions of Faro is the large nature reserve Ria Formosa (which is also the resting place for a number of bird species during migration each spring and fall) and the long beach (which is about 7 miles from downtown). The warm, pleasant climate is also an important contribution to making Faro a very popular tourist spot. Around 5 million tourists come here every year, primarily sun and beach holiday.

Otherwise, the Archaeological Museum “Museu Arqueologico” the most famous cultural attraction in Faro. It is situated in the old town – in a building from 1518. Close by is the cathedral Sé de Faro, which was rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake. Of the originally Gothic church is only preserved tower.

There are several interesting museums in Faro, including Maritime Museum Museo Maritimo in the harbor and an ethnographic museum – Museu Etnografico – featuring changing exhibits related to local culture and craft traditions.
