Prestwick is a small coastal town located in southwest Scotland at bay Firth of Clyde, specifically in the region of South Ayrshire.The city is located about 50 km southwest of Glasgow.
Around 3 miles south of Prestwick is the larger town of Ayr. The two cities are growing more and more together.
The city is known for its golf courses, especially “Prestwick Golf Club”. This was founded in 1851, Prestwick is known for being the birthplace of “The Open Championship” – golf’s oldest championship. In addition to the Golf Club, the city has two other golf courses.
One of the city’s tourist attractions are the ruins of the old church of St. Nicholas from 1100, which is close to Prestwick Rail Station. The church is surrounded by an old graveyard.
The main street in Prestwick consists of a number of specialty shops and nice restaurants and bars, and along the coast there is a long boardwalk – where there is also an outdoor swimming pool.
Prestwick also has several tennis courts, and also hosts one of the largest bowling. In summer there are good bathing at Prestwick along the coast – where you find the great mile-long beach.
Just outside the city is Glasgow Prestwick International Airport.This airport is used mainly by low cost airlines such as Ryanair.
