Riyadh is the capital and largest city of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The city is located in Ar-Ryadprovinsen in Najdregionen – centrally located on the Arabian Peninsula. Riyadh is located on a plateau – approx. 600 meters – and is surrounded by desert.

The capital has approximately 5 million inhabitants (2011), and is the major economic, cultural and commercial center. Riyadh is also one of the richest cities in the Middle East.

The city has a tropical climate – with very hot summers and mild winters. There is little precipitation falls in this area.

Old town “Al-Bathaa” is a major tourist attraction in Riyadh, which is home to the famous jewellery markets.

Other attractions in the capital include Masmak Castle from 1865 – listed in the camps National Museum of Saudi Arabia – with its rich collection of artifacts and relics, the Royal Saudi Air Force Museum – with displays of aircraft and aviation-related artifacts as well as park and recreation area “Salam Park” .

Otherwise, the city has several famous skyscrapers – including “Kingdom Centre” which measures 302 meters and is Saudi Arabia ‘s tallest building. Also “Al Faisaliah Centre” is a famous landmark of Riyadh, and extending   267 meters above ground level.This was the country’s first skyscraper. It must also be noted that the 170-meter high TV tower from 1981, a popular observation deck. Here visitors can get fantastic views of the capital.

Riyadh has many modern shopping centers, and in the “Diplomatic Quarter” is the foreign embassies and international organizations.

The city’s main airport – King Khalid International Airport – located 36 miles north of downtown.
