Salzburg is located west of Austria by the river Salsach – near the border with neighboring Germany.The city has 148,000 inhabitants (2011), and is located 115 km southeast of the German city Munich.

Salzburg is a major tourist, business and cultural center, and also a significant transport hub. Salzburg is also known to be a convention city.

The city is famous for its festival – which has been an annual event since 1920. Salzburg Festival has made a center of musical and theatrical culture.

The composer WA Mozart was born in Salzburg in 1756, the house he grew up in has been museum since 1880.

The old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and there is such the old town hall from 1768, the university (founded 1618) and the Franciscan from the 1300s.

Other tourist attractions in Salzburg’s Cathedral from 1628, Residenz building from the 1600s, Kapuciner Monastery from 1602 and Mirabell Palace from 1606 – which also has a beautiful garden. Next door, the music institution “Mozarteum” of concert halls, music academy and Mozart archive.

It also recommended a visit to the Museum of Art and Cultural History (“Salzburg Museum”) – where such see finds from the Roman era and older paintings and sculptures.

On a hill above the town is the fortress Hohensalzburg, which was founded in 1077. This is Europe’s fortifications from the 11th century, and is a major tourist attraction. Borgen has nearly 1 million visitors annually.

Salzburg Airport is located 11 miles southwest of downtown.
