The university town of Lund is located in southwest Sweden, specifically in Skåne.The city has about 112,000 inhabitants (2011), and is located 15 km northeast of Malmö.
Lund is a very old city, founded in the year 1020. During the Middle Ages the city was a cultural center for the Nordic countries. Lund is situated in a fertile plain, and is now best known for its university, which was founded in 1668.
Lund is also an important commercial center, and has a number of museums and art galleries.
The city’s biggest tourist attraction, the Lund Cathedral from the 1100s, Sweden’s most famous Romanesque edifice. The church is built in sandstone and has two towers.
Other popular attractions in Lund include The Museum of History, Cultural History Museum – with its open-air museum that has approx. 30 buildings from the 1600s, Lund Konsthall – with exhibitions of contemporary art, Skissernas Museum, Historical Museum of Medicine and Vatten hall – a popular science center for the whole family with interactive exhibits and Planetarium.
The city also has a great botanical garden (with botanical museum). There are also good opportunities for swimming in Lund, and the city has several swimming pools – both indoor and outdoor.
The nearest airport is Malmö Airport, located 26 km southeast of Lund.
