Trondheim is situated in Central Norway and is the 3 largest city with 176,000 inhabitants (2012). The city is located where Nidelva flows into the Trondheim Fjord, and is the administrative center of South-Trøndelag county. The island Munkholmen also belongs to the city.

Trondheim is a university, and is also an important trade center and transport hub for Central Norway.

Trondheim was founded in 997 by Viking King Olav Tryggvason, and the square in the center is a statue of him, which stands on a high pedestal.

City’s biggest tourist attraction is the cathedral (Nidaros Cathedral), which was begun in the 1100s. This is Norway’s national sanctuary and one of the largest medieval buildings.

Other important tourist attractions in Trondheim include The Old Town Bridge from 1862, Our Lady’s Church from the 1200s, the Archbishop’s Palace from the 1100s, Museum of Art, Folk Museum, the Museum of Applied Arts – large collection of decorative art and design, science center – with popular science exhibits and Planetarium and Science Museum – with its archaeological, historical and science exhibits.

Tyholttårnet in Trondheim is also worth a visit. This is a 124-meter high TV tower, where visitors can get up to a viewing platform located 70 feet above ground level. From here you get a great view of the city and region. There is also a revolving restaurant in the tower.

The city’s international airport – Trondheim Airport – located 32 miles east of downtown.
