Pittsburgh is located in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania, and is a city with about 320,000 inhabitants (2010). Two rivers flow together at the center (Allegheny and Monongahela) to form the large Ohio River. Pittsburgh’s river port is one of America’s most important.

Pittsburgh district has for 200 years been one of the most important when it comes to the production of iron and steel – and the city is indeed often been called the “Steel City”. Still does heavy industry much of Pittsburg economy.

The city was founded in 1764, after the British had captured a French fort on the spot – and named after the British Prime Minister William Pitt the Already in 1787 the city got its first university – the University of Pittsburgh.

Pittsburgh has many cultural institutions, including Heinz Hall (Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra) and the Benedum Center (Pittsburgh Opera). Also a number of the city’s museums are well worth a visit – for example, “Carnegie Museum of Natural History” – including dinosaur skeletons and Art Museum “Carnegie Museum of Art.” The town also has a museum for the world famous pop artist Andy Warhol.

A tourist attractions that are especially aimed at children and adolescents, the popular science “The Carnegie Science Center.”

Otherwise, a visit to the Botanical Gardens in Schenley Park is highly recommended. Here there are also various art exhibitions in the greenhouse complex.

The nearest airport is Pittsburgh International Airport, located 30 miles west of downtown.
