San Francisco is located on a peninsula in the bay of San Francisco Bay on the Pacific Ocean – in the U.S. state of California.The city has about 770,000 inhabitants (2010), but it is estimated the entire metropolitan area with, also including includes Oakland and Fremont, a population increase to about 4.3 million.

San Francisco has since the 1800s been a cultural melting pot where different ethnic groups have established their own neighbourhoods with architectural and cultural character. This is reflected in the district names like Chinatown, Japantown and the Latin Quarter.

It was also in San Francisco hippie movement originated in the late 1960s, and the city has had a reputation for being liberal and tolerant towards what is different than “mainstream” culture.

There are many exciting attractions in San Francisco. When it comes to buildings, the city may be associated primarily with the 2.7 km long bridge Golden Gate, where it was opened in 1937, was the world’s longest suspension bridge. It is a popular landmark of the city. The Golden Gate is also a large fortress and several parks, including Golden Gate Park – which also includes several museums, an aquarium and a planetarium.

Nearby are several of the city’s tourist attractions – including the Opera House and the Auditorium (which seats 10,000 people). Also Art Museum “San Francisco Museum of Modern Art” (SFOMA) is located in this area. The city’s oldest building is the Spanish mission church “Mission Dolores”, begun 1782.

Part of the historic harbor area – Fisherman’s Wharf – has boat connections with the famous and infamous Alcatraz prison island, which today is a museum.

San Francisco is located in a steep and rugged terrain that rises from the Pacific Coast, where the highest point is nearly 300 m This has caused some traffic challenges – and has been the main reason for the development of the city’s world famous tram system – Cable Cars, which is also considered one of San Francisco’s tourist attractions.
