Caracas is the capital of Venezuela, located in the North – approx. 10 km south of the port of La Guaira by the Caribbean Sea.The town lies at the foot of the mountain massif of the Cordillera del Litoral (highest point: 2640 m.).

The Caracas city has approx. 3.2 million inhabitants (2010) – but it should be about 6 million in the metropolitan area. Caracas was founded in 1567 under the name Santiago de León de Caracas.

There are many popular tourist attractions in Caracas. Several of these are near the central Bolívar Square, like much else in Caracas named after freedom hero Simón Bolivar, who was born here. In and around the square there are many historical monuments, and this is also El Capitolio (Palacio Federal) from the 1600s, Caracas Cathedral from around 1670 and the Santa Capilla chapel (known for its beautiful stained glass windows).

Another popular destination is the imposing building Panteon Nacional in 1874. It is located in the northern part of the city, and was originally built as a church. Later that function as funerary mausoleum for many of Venezuela’s celebrities.

Otherwise Arte Contemporáno well worth a visit. It is one of South America’s most important art museums, where in addition to Venezuelan art can also see paintings of such Picasso and Miró.

You should also check out Centro de Arte La Estancia, which is a wonderful park with beautiful landscaping and an abundance of trees and flowers. The park is centered around an original coffee plantation.

The nearest airport is Simón Bolivar International Airport, located 24 km northwest of the city.
