Harare is the capital and largest city in Zimbabwe, located in the northeastern part of the country.The city has 1.6 million inhabitants, while the metropolitan area has a population of 2.8 million (2011).

Harare is situated on a plateau 1490 meters above sea level – and for that reason a pleasant temperate climate. Average temperature is 18 degrees C.

The capital is the country’s administrative, commercial and industrial center, and also an important transport hub.

The city is famous for its beautiful avenues adorned with Jacaranda trees, which bloom 2 times a year. In addition, Harare many parks and green spaces, and is therefore often called the “Garden City”.

The city was founded in 1890 and named until 1982 Salisbury. Harare development is a product of the colonial period of European settlement and is today a modern city. The cityscape is marked by new buildings and modern skyscrapers with low buildings from the early 1900’s.

Harare has a number of popular tourist attractions – including Parliament in 1895, the cathedral “Angelican Cathedral” – built in the period 1913 to 1964, the City Hall from 1933 and the African National Gallery – kunsmuseum with exhibitions of paintings, reliefs and stone sculptures.

Other attractions in and around the city is “Mukuvisi Woodlands” – a wildlife sanctuary with elephants, Chapungu Sculpture Park, Zimbabwe Museum of Human Science and a Lion Park – where you can get close to both lions and cheetahs.

There are also several golf courses in Harare.

The city’s airport, Harare International Airport, located 15 miles south of downtown.
